The third year of clinical anesthesia training (CA-3) may be completed in one of three tracks as defined by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). These tracks are:

CA-3 Advanced Anesthesia Track: Residents choosing this track work in a variety of areas and are responsible for complex and difficult anesthetic procedures and perioperative assignments. The length of each rotation is flexible and can be scheduled based on individual interests and need.
CA-3 Subspecialty Clinical Track: The subspecialty clinical track can be selected for the CA-3 year. This consists of six months of additional training in one of the following subspecialties:

  • Cardiovascular Anesthesia
  • Obstetrics Anesthesia
  • Pain Medicine
  • Pediatric Anesthesia

CA-3 Clinical Scientist Track: The clinical scientist track includes the conduct of an in-depth laboratory research project during the CA-3 year at the VA and/or WSU. The other rotations offered will include a Research Rotation of six months available in the CA-3 year to two residents in each cohort. Selection shall be competitive and will be made based on outstanding performance through the program by the candidate.

Durations of Rotation:

During the CA-1 through CA-3 years the ACGME required duration for each of the required subspecialty rotations are as follows:

Rotation
(Duration, in months (four weeks = one month)
CA-1 CA-2 CA-3
Obstetric Anesthesia 1 1 1
Pediatric Anesthesia 0 3 0
Neuroanesthesia 1 1 0
Cardiothoracic Anesthesia 0 2 0
Critical Care Medicine 1 2 1
Pain Medicine / Regional Anesthesia 1 2 (Regional)
PACU 1 0 0

During the CA3 year residents have greater flexibility over their schedule. The only required rotations for CA3 year are listed above, then residents may choose one of the 3 tracks (Advacned Track, Subspecialty Track, Research Track) to fill the rest of the year's schedule (6 months). CA1 and CA2 years are filled with required rotations, with very little flexibility.
